THE
HISTORY OF CUAA
In
1987, six concerned individuals envisioned the Ministry of Christians
United Against Addiction in response to the needs of born-again persons
and their suffering family members, whose lives had been ravaged by the
devastating effects of substance abuse.
The
original founding members consist of Rev. Ora L. Love, Sis. Barbara
Chamberlain, Sis. Adrienne Carter, *Dea. Jim
Hairston, *Sis. Victoria Kenney,
Sis. Gwendolyn Osbourne, and Sis. Thelma Williams ( *deceased). In 1988
Victoria Kenney became a major asset to CUAA. Her involvement helped to move the
Ministry to another level. Elder Luther Chambers, Pastor of the Voice of
Deliverance Church, hosted the first CUAA Support Group Meeting, (called Praise,
Prayer and Rap) led by Dea. Jim Hairston. In 1989 the Ministry became an
outreach of New Covenant Church of Philadelphia where Bishop C. Milton
Grannum and Rev. Hyacinth Bobb Grannum, are Pastors. New Covenant Church of
Philadelphia provides spiritual support, and seventy-five percent of the
financial support needed by the Ministry.
CUAA,
as a Ministry, has grown under the direction of Rev. Ora L. Love,
encompassing, education, emergency assistance, family counseling, drug and
alcohol prevention and intervention programs, housing, long term rehabilitation
referrals and family support groups.
Essential
to the Ministry is CUAA’s network of Family Addiction Support
Groups, that create an outlet for victims of
the recovery process to share experiences and to encourage one another
through prayer and group support. These Support Groups meet around the City of
Philadelphia.
Today,
CUAA continues to be an effective God-given instrument of healing and
deliverance. With its five member executive committee, twenty professional and
lay person representing diverse but complimentary backgrounds in
self-experience, psychology and education, the Ministry continues to grow and
allow the will and work of God to transform and restore His people.
This
September, 2002 CUAA celebrates its 15th Anniversary. In
fifteen years hundreds of lives have been touched and changed. God has used the
Ministry to repair many broken homes and families, by teaching and educating
on
addiction and helping them to become rooted and grounded in His WORD.
One
of CUAA’s greatest accomplishments has been Support Group Ministry in
Georgetown, SC, Mahpec, NY and Norristown, PA. Another is that CUAA has
its own website on the Internet.
